Alexander Zlotnik (Moscow 1940) studied sculpture under the Russian sculptors, Wilensky and Schulz. He then joined the famous Sirikov Academy and was elected member of the USSR Artists Union in 1964. At the time, in Russia, an artist who was not a member of this union could not officially exhibit or sell his works. Like all members of the union, he was given a studio and access to official exhibitions. At the age of twenty, he won first prize at the Tchaikovski Festival for the best portrait sculpture of the composer and from then on gained a considerable reputation in Russia.
