Venice

Venice  is an original modern artwork realized in the first decades of the XX Century by the Italian artist Tono Zancanaro  (Padua, 1906 - Padua, 1985).

Original sepia watercolor on paper.

Hand-signed ,  titled and  inscripted  by the artist in the center of the composition (on the small pillar of the bridge): Prete todesco a Venezia Tono Zancanaro 39. An iscription appears on the lower left corner too.

Venice is a beautiful small watercolor on paper realized with the hsades of sepia. It represents a priest who is watching at the observer with a briefcase in his hand, a large black hat and a long black toga. He has just crossed the bridge and, in the background, we see the magnificent basilica of San Marco.

This work has been realized by the Italian artist  Antonio Zancanaro (Padua, April 8, 1906 - Padua, June 3, 1985). Zancanaro was an Italian track hockey player, painter and engraver. He began to paint as a self-taught in 1932. He trained mainly in Florence, in contact with Ottone Rosai, and in Milan, where he kept in touch with Ernesto Treccani, Renato Guttuso and other exponents of the anti-fascist cultural milieu. He traveled a lot abroad, especially during the years of the Fascism in Italy, and was always a member of the Communist Party. His production moved above all in the field of Realism, with pictorial cycles depicting the humblest social realities of both Northern and Southern Italy. Particularly known was the Gibbo series, a surreal and ferociously caricatured character inspired by Mussolini.
