Subject Abstract

This print collection, enclosed inside a colored cover formed by two original lithographs, contains eight original colored lithographs. Hand signed and numbered by the artist and drawn on the presses of Jean Pons in Paris. The stones were erased after the drawings. This is an artist's proof, copy I/X. Oeuvre gravée.

This print collection has been printed in 115 copies, numbered 1/115 to 115/115, plus 10 copies of numbered collaborators numbered I/X to X/X. Printing was finished in March 1963.

Karel Appel
(Amsterdam 1921 – Zurigo 2006) is a Dutch painter. In 1948, he contributed to founding the experimental Belgian-Dutch group Reflex, later conjoined to the group COBRA in 1949, emphasizing the need for a new figurativeness of Expressionist origins in the European artistic culture. Appel’s painting style, effectively manifested in the great and tragic portraits and wall decorations at the civic museum of Amsterdam and at the palace of UNESCO in Paris, pertains to the field of Abstractionism because of the dominant significance attributed to the pictorial matter.
