Il Sepolcro di Ladislao

The Sepulchre of Ladislao is an etching engraved by Augusto Fornari , an artist who lived in Rome between 1812 and 1864. The paper sheet presents the signature Fornari inc. ” engraved on plate on the lower right, while “ Italia ” is engraved on the higher left. “ Tav. XV ” appears on the higher right. The state of conservation is very good, except for some fungal foxing especially on the higher part of the paper.

The engraving represents the Monumento funebre a Ladislao di Durazzo , brother of Giovanna II d’Angiò: a Gothic sepulchral monument of Andrea Guardi from Florence, completed in many parts by other Tuscan authors during the period from 1414 to 1428 ca., and situated in the church of St. John in Carbonara of Naples.

This original artwork, of excellent craftmanship and precision in the stroke and perspectival vision, complies with the spread taste for the study and memory of the Middle Ages and of Gothic Art, typical of the first half of 1800.
