French injured soldiers, almost dying, are patched up and put back on the front as soon as possible. The scene is completed by a landscape of corpses. This print aims at depicting the pathetic nature of military illness. The broken branches of the trees in the background symbolize the wounded soldiers. The dying soldier on the left seems a prelude to Goya's canvas, taken care of by Arrieta, and a secularization of the iconography of Michelangelo's Pietà .
