Antonio Calderara

Antonio Calderara (Abbiategrasso, 1903 - Vacciago, 1978)

Self-taught and eclectic artist, he has a figurative debut to approach the artistic movements of the Italian twentieth century. In 1954, the study of Mondrian's work led him first to experimentation with light and then to a progressive loss of the landscape reference, increasingly moving towards an iconic expressive form that saw him participating in European the research, mostly of German origin. Throughout his life, almost entirely spent in isolation near the Lake Orta, he wondered about the role of light and color trying to answer the question “what is painting?”.
