Garibaldi landed for the first time in Caprera on 25 September 1849, coming from Tunis. Thanks to a bequest from his brother, he bought half of the island in 1855 and settled there in 1856, living in a small sheepfold, restored with the help of his son Menotti

and some friends. With the intention of reuniting his children in Caprera, and as the building was insufficiently large, Garibaldi had a wooden hut brought from Nice. His children, Teresita and Ricciotti, arrived in Caprera in the summer of 1856.

Once the work of arranging the temporary home was completed, the construction of the real home began, which will later be called the White House. Here Garibaldi lived with his children, with his last wife Francesca Armosino and with some faithful friends,

devoting himself to sheep farming and agriculture, until his death on June 2, 1882. Against the will of the Hero of Two Worlds, who wanted the cremation of his remains, the body of Garibaldi, embalmed, was buried in the family cemetery, near the White

House, under a boulder of rough granite.

Subsequently, the Garibaldi house continued to be inhabited by the family. The last to live there was Clelia Garibaldi, until her death in 1959.
