This artwork was realized by the English artist Martin Bradley (London, 1931). While he was in Central and South America, he began painting portraits of his shipmates before returning to England three years later. Later on, the artist studied oriental languages, literature, and art history, and developed a fascination with the art and calligraphy of China and Japan. During the 1950s, he moved to France, where he came in contact with Rudolphe Augustinci, who was the director of the famous art galley Rive Gauche, well-known for its artists such as Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, and René Magritte.
